A journey through Vietnam at its most varied, moving from the energy of Hanoi into the mountains of Sapa, through river valleys, limestone bays and extraordinary cave systems before reaching the cultural landscapes of Central Vietnam. Along the way, cities, villages, ancient sites and rural life reveal very different facets of the country.
Begin in Hanoi, where an army jeep offers an unusually immediate introduction to the capital. Travel through narrow lanes and local neighbourhoods before taking in the French Quarter, Old Quarter, lakes, temples and landmark Long Bien Bridge. From here, the journey heads into the mountains of Sapa, with time to walk through Lao Chai, Ta Van and Cat Cat villages, encounter Hmong, Dao and Giay communities and see the terraced landscapes that define northern Vietnam. A cable-car ascent towards the summit of Fansipan brings a completely different perspective before an overnight train carries you back towards Hanoi.
Continue into the limestone country of Ninh Binh. Explore Tam Coc, ancient Hoa Lu and Mua Caves before returning to Hanoi and travelling onwards to Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay. An overnight cruise weaves between dramatic karst formations, with opportunities for kayaking, swimming and quiet time on deck as the landscape changes with the light.
Flying south to Dong Hoi opens up another remarkable landscape. Venture underground at Paradise Cave, then take a more adventurous approach to Dark Cave with ziplining, swimming, kayaking and a mud bath. From Dong Hoi, travel overland towards Hoi An, pausing in Hue en route, with the possibility of seeing the traditional incense-making of Thuy Xuan village.
The final days explore Central Vietnam in greater depth. Discover the Marble Mountains and Am Phu Cave, look out across the coast from the Son Tra Peninsula, and visit the ancient Cham sanctuary of My Son. An evening performance traces Hoi An’s transformation from rural settlement to international trading port, while a final countryside experience introduces the rhythms of fishing, rice cultivation and village life.
