Highlights of Nepal

Nepal reveals itself in layers. In the Kathmandu Valley, ancient royal cities, Buddhist stupas and Hindu temples remain woven into everyday life. Beyond them rise the Himalayas, framing the gentler landscapes around Pokhara, while further south the forests and grasslands of Chitwan introduce a journey into the wild. This journey brings these contrasting worlds together.

The journey begins in the Kathmandu Valley, where centuries of history and faith have left an extraordinary cultural landscape. In Patan, wander through Durbar Square, surrounded by intricately carved temples, courtyards and the former Royal Palace, before climbing to Swayambhunath, whose hilltop setting looks across the valley. Kathmandu’s own Durbar Square draws you deeper into the city’s living traditions, including the Kumari Temple, home of Nepal’s revered Living Goddess. A guided walk through one of old Kathmandu’s neighbourhoods can add another dimension, leading through local markets, hidden shrines, traditional courtyards and artisan workshops.

There is more to discover across the valley. Bhaktapur Durbar Square preserves an exquisite collection of palaces, temples and richly carved timber architecture, while Boudhanath Stupa has been a centre of Tibetan Buddhist life for generations. At Pashupatinath, one of Nepal’s most sacred Hindu sites, temples and cremation ghats line the banks of the Bagmati River, offering a powerful glimpse into rituals surrounding faith, life and death. For a completely different perspective on Nepal, an optional early-morning scenic flight towards Mount Everest can also be arranged, weather permitting.

Leaving the valley, the road winds towards Pokhara, pausing at Manakamana, where a cable car climbs to the hilltop temple dedicated to the goddess associated with the fulfilment of wishes. In Pokhara, the Himalayas take centre stage. An early morning at Sarangkot brings the prospect of sunrise over the Annapurna range, followed by visits to Devi’s Fall, Bindabasini Temple, the Seti Gorge, Phewa Lake and the Peace Pagoda. Those who would like to venture beyond the town can choose an easy to moderate guided trek through the surrounding hills, where terraced fields and rural settlements unfold beneath views of the Annapurnas. Or you can take a scenic morning boatride on Pokhara lake and discover the ancient Hindu Temple located in the midst of its glittering waters.

The landscape changes dramatically again in Chitwan. Himalayan foothills give way to the subtropical forests and grasslands of Chitwan National Park, home to greater one-horned rhinoceros, deer, rich birdlife and the elusive Bengal tiger. Time here is deliberately unhurried, with opportunities to explore by jeep, boat and on foot, allowing the rhythms of the forest to shape each day. From Chitwan, return to Kathmandu for a final pause before the journey through Nepal draws to a close.
