Best of Vietnam

For those wishing to discover Vietnam, this journey brings together the places and experiences that define the country. From Hanoi and Ha Long Bay to imperial Hue, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City. It offers a broad introduction to Vietnam’s history, landscapes, food and local life, with time to experience each at a considered pace.

Begin in Hanoi, where lakes, temples, grand boulevards and the narrow streets of the Old Quarter reveal a capital shaped by different periods of Vietnamese history. Explore its landmark sites, wander through local neighbourhoods and pause for traditional egg coffee. Time at leisure leaves room for independent discoveries before travelling to the coast.

Board an overnight cruise through Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay, sailing between forested limestone karsts and quiet waterways. Continue south to Hue, the former imperial capital, to explore the Citadel, royal heritage and Thien Mu Pagoda. Visit a Buddhist nunnery to learn about monastic life and share a vegetarian lunch prepared within the community, offering a quieter perspective on the traditions of this historic city.

From Hue, board the heritage train for the memorable journey across the Hai Van Pass, where mountains descend towards the sea, before continuing to Hoi An. Discover the old trading quarter, with its merchant houses, temples and layers of Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese influence. Venture into the countryside around Hoi An, visiting the gardens of Tra Que and travelling along the Thu Bon River to encounter farming, fishing and traditional village life. Time at leisure allows Hoi An to be enjoyed independently.

The journey concludes in Ho Chi Minh City, where historic landmarks and colonial-era architecture sit alongside the energy of contemporary Vietnam. Explore the city’s neighbourhoods and food culture after dark by Vespa, stopping at local markets and favourite eating places along the way. A final free day provides time to pursue individual interests or venture further afield before departure.
